Strike of Fiat workers in Turin

September‐October 1969: Turin is going through the “hottest fall” ever experienced in the city. At this point the Piedmont capital, for several years now, has become a factory-city, the “Detroit of Europe”, with a population increase of 700,000 to over 1,200,000 over the last two decades. The automotive industry in Turin, with Fiat and Lancia, employs over 150,000 workers, without including all those who benefit from its related supply chain in the city. The housing shortage, in spite of the huge buildings erected on the outskirts, and high rental costs are among the various causes of social unrest spreading through the factories in these months.
